Unlike some elderberry extracts which are heated before bottling (this process destroys some of the natural vitamin C,) this best selling elderberry elixir is made from high quality, raw ingredients, which are macerated for a minimum of 4 weeks in order to extract the maximum herbal therapeutics.
Elderberries have long been prized for their anti-viral properties and immune enhancing effects. In fact, extract of elderberry is listed in the 2000 Mosby’s Nursing Drug Reference Guide as a viable supplement for colds and flu. In clinical trials, patients who were given elderberry syrup (4 times a day for 5 days) recovered on average 4 days faster than those who received a placebo. The use of elderberry juice was also sanctioned by the government of Panama to help bring the 1995 flu pandemic under control. In tests it fared as well (if not better!) than Tamiflu, the standard medical prescription at the time.
Elderberries contain lashings of vitamins A, B and C, and are packed chock full of anti-oxidants which help to protect cells from damage. In addition to helping fight off colds and flu, they’ve also been shown to help support heart health, improve eyesight and reduce inflammation in conditions like tonsillitis. This is because they contain high levels of flavonoids which may account for some of these therapeutic actions. This heirloom recipe also includes ginger, licorice root and honey, which are also traditionally used for the symptomatic relief of colds and flu.
Unlike many over the counter medicines, this syrup is a delight to take. Try drizzling over Greek yogurt or even add to a glass of Prosecco! For acute conditions take right off the spoon (one teaspoon every couple of hours up to a maximum of 4 doses.)
Elderberry elixir may cause loose stools if taken in larger doses. As elderberry elixir contains brandy, this product is unsuitable for those avoiding alcohol and children under the age of 12. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are also advised to avoid taking this product. Always consult your physician if taking elderberry elixir alongside prescription medication.
Full dosage instructions are included on the product label.
